The Hive’s annual Homecoming Spirit Week kicked off on Monday, October 23, giving students and teachers an opportunity to showcase their style, personality, and most importantly, their school spirit.

The week started off with “Rhyme without Reason” day. Students teamed up to create clever outfit combinations, incorporating both whimsical wordplay and colorful fashion.

“There were so many interesting costumes,” said senior Ruth Haddaway, who partnered with her friend to form a “napper and rapper” duo. “I didn't expect so many people to do it,” Haddaway said. “It was cool to see everyone participating.”

Next up was “Meme Day,” where students took the shape of their favorite viral internet meme. Drake, The Rock, and Damian from Mean Girls were all seen walking the halls. After that was “Flannel Day,” a chance for Hornets to brandish a fall season staple.

Along the lines of a Throwback Thursday, we next had “2000s Day.” Students donned their most stylish vintage looks that harkened back to an era of low-rise jeans, couture tracksuits, and flashy necklaces. “Bringing back the way things used to be, this sort of nostalgia, just adds so much fun to the school,” said Larissa Rodriguez ’26.

The week wrapped up with “Color Wars,” where a competition was put in place to see which grade could demonstrate the most enthusiasm. Freshmen wore purple, sophomores wore orange, seniors wore green, and the juniors, who won, wore brown.

It’s safe to say that this day had the most engagement. “You really got to see every grade partake in the fun,” said Haddaway. “It felt like every class was united.”

Spirit Week is an occasion where all students can feel included and share pride in their school. “It's not something I participated in during my earlier years at Midwood, but I wish I had,” said Sami Fauz ‘24. “It’s a great way to get involved, maybe even appear in a few pictures.”

School can often feel like a grind. It’s important to be reminded that we’re all there for one another and that we, the students, are what makes Midwood so great.
