Strike! Girls Bowling Racks Up Winning Season
By TRACY SHI
The girls bowling season came to an end with a 1-2 loss to New Utrecht in the quarterfinals on November 18. The team had been on a roll, having made a run in the playoffs after an undefeated season. But it hasn’t been easy.
“As a senior on the team, I feel pressured because we have to set an example for the rest of the team and take a leadership role,” said Elizabeth Vool ’20.
The matches can often be challenging, not just physically but also mentally.
“We slowly go insane after we do the same motions over and over again and expect ourselves to receive different or better results,” said Jacquelyn Tang ’20. “Sometimes it’s frustrating, but it’s all worth it.”
Samantha Li ’21, who holds the team’s the highest overall average at 133, said, “Our team is positive and inspiring. It’s not about doing good or bad. The most important thing is to have fun and work together productively.”
On November 12, a week before their last playoff game, Coach Michael Giordano welcomed a baby boy. This meant the girls had to practice on their own, but that did not faze them.
To their surprise, Mr. Giordano walked in right as they were preparing to begin their last game, with his newborn son in hand. The team lit up with joy.
Two weeks earlier, on October 30, the team held a post-game event for the seniors at Pizza D’Amore, an Italian restaurant in Mill Basin. Last year, the team did not have any seniors at all. This year, the team, coach, and parents celebrated the seniors on the team to reward them for their hard work.
Coach Giordano gave out roses and speeches for each of the seniors on the team. The underclassmen also gave the seniors posters.
